David Leishman charges: Blaxland High School teacher accused of sex assault

A Sydney high school teacher accused by police of sexually assaulting a female student after “develop(ing) a relationship” with her will front court on several charges relating to the matter today.

David Leishman, 49, has been charged with procure child for unlawful sexual activity, aggravated indecent assault – victim under authority of offender, and three counts of aggravated sexual touching of another person in the Blue Mountains.

The Blaxland High School music teacher was arrested in his Katoomba home on Friday over the alleged unlawful sexual activity with a student.

In a 2015 Blue Mountains Gazette article about a music class Mr Leishman taught, students spoke glowingly of the teacher who one described as “the glue that binds them together”.

Earlier this month, officers from Blue Mountains Police Area Command began an investigation following reports a local teacher had touched a student on several occasions while at school, according to a police statement released overnight.

“Police will allege in court that man developed a relationship with a female student while he was working as a teacher at a high school in the Blue Mountains during which he allegedly indecently assaulted and sexually touched her on several occasions between 2015 and 2019,” the statement read.

Mr Leishman was granted conditional bail on Saturday to reappear at Katoomba Local Court today.
