A man found dead chained to a woman in a Queensland dam on the weekend has been identified and a picture of his last movements has been released by police.

The two bodies were discovered by a kayaker on Saturday afternoon, chained together and floating about five metres from the shore of Gordonbrook Dam near Kingaroy.

Police have confirmed the local man was 51-year-old Darryl Smith.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, has not been formally identified but it is expected more details will emerge after a post-mortem on Tuesday – including how the pair died.

Acting Inspector Paul McCusker told reporters the two bodies were connected by a chain and weighted.

“At this stage, police are very open as to what has occurred at the dam but we are not trying to locate another person who is involved in their death,” he said.

Queensland Police confirmed in a statement investigators were not looking at the involvement of a third party.

Police released an image of Mr Smith in the town of Wondai on March 10 and are seeking information from the public about his last movements.

Mr Smith’s car, a white Holden commodore Station Wagon with registration plates 306 BS3, was located parked at the dam on Saturday but is believed to have been there since the Sunday before.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw the car parked at the dam before March 13.

It is understood the bodies had been in the dam for some time.

South Burnett Regional Council announced on Monday it had stopped using water from Gordonbrook Dam for blended drinking water supply and was now relying fully on Boondooma Dam.

Mr Smith also used the name Matthew Goldman and ran a shop in Kingaroy called Goldman’s Oracles ‘n’ Gifts, according to the Courier Mail.

A resident told the publication they had previously seen the same car and a man at the dam a number of times in the past.

“For 18 months just before Covid hit, there was a gentleman living in his car and tarps (who was) permanently parked beside the very first picnic table in the boat ramp area,” they said.
